The trail overpass at Bebout and Valley Brook roads in Peters will begin demolition Monday, Oct. 24, causing road closures for three weeks, according to township Manager Michael Silvestri.
There may be some geotechnical exploration on the trail to do next week, he said.
Until early November, Silvestri is urging residents to follow posted signs and detours—Justabout Road to Thomas Road.
Montour Trail Council volunteers will also be marking the detour at nearly every turn with directional arrows for trail users’ convenience, its newsletter states. "But for those of you with smart phones, simply scan the QR code on this page."
The council has placed directional signs through the Colony Manor and Briarcliff plans to Peterswood Park for bicyclists, Silvestri said.
According to the trail newsletter, the bike detour is approximately 1.75 miles long and traverses mostly residential streets or park trails, with significant climbs and descents.
Mid-February, the road will close again while beams and decking are placed to connect the Arrowhead Trail.
The trail will remain unconnected throughout the construction.
Trail users should plan to use one side of the closure or the other for about six months, the newsletter states.
The council is advising trail users that "the detour has some nontrivial hills, travels along a short stretch of somewhat heavily-traveled Bebout Road outside the park entrance, and is definitely not recommended for walkers or runners."
Marricco Construction of Canonsburg is expected to complete the project in May.
The route is documented in Google Maps: http://tiny.cc/BeboutBridgeConstruction.
