Spring Reads: Top 10 Books for Peters Township Children

Here are the top picks, as chosen by the Peters Township Public Library.

It's finally spring! A great season to sit and read a good book. But what to read? We enlisted the help of our friends at the Peters Township Public Library, and they gave us this top 10 list of best bets for children. On Saturday we shared the top 10 books for adults, while the top 10 books for teens was shared Friday.  Without further ado, here are the top 10 picks for children! Peters Township Public Library, Lensshooters to Offer Photo Contest

All winners will receive a 2013-14 membership to the Western Pennsylvania Lensshooters.

The Peters Township Public Library and the Western Pennsylvania Lensshooters are hosting an amateur photography contest this month. The contest is open to all amateur photographers to participate in three different categories—photographs of people, landscapes, or animals. The first-place prize in each category will be $25; the second-place prize will be $10, and third-place prize will be a certificate. All winners will receive a 2013-14 membership to the Western Pennsylvania Lensshooters Camera Club, which meets monthly at the library. But remember: The Deadline for entries is Thursday, April 25. South Hills Musicians to be Highlighted in Band Festival

The 10th annual Three Rivers Community Band Festival is scheduled for April 27.

The 10th annual Three Rivers Community Band Festival will bring together three of the best community bands in the western Pennsylvania region, plus an all-new festival band. The festival is scheduled from 2:30 until 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the Upper St. Clair Theater, located in Upper St. Clair High School. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated. The Three Rivers Community Band Festival is a showcase of the musically-talented individuals in the region, and the concert promises a medley of music that will appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.  Community Band South represents the South Hills communities. Shovlin Dancers Place Ninth at World Championship

Dancers from Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance competed March 29 in the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship.

Dancers from Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance took their talents from a studio in Dormont Municipal Center to the world stage last weekend. The troupe performed at the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship in Boston, and placed ninth out of 13 groups. Instructor Sheila Shovlin created and choreographed the narrative drama the troupe performed—a unique performance, considering that many competitors at the Championship perform solo, rather than in a group. Shovlin's sister, instructor Liz Shovlin Grinko, said considering the level of competition the troupe was up against, ninth place is not bad at all. "They were very happy with that," she said. "We were competing with dancers from higher brackets who were there for solos as well, so you had …

Artist Visiting Camera Club Meeting in Peters

The Western Pennsylvania Lensshooters Camera club meeting will be held April 10—see who will be there to share his expertise! Did we mention there is a field trip planned, too?

Bob Agnew is a true artist when it comes to photographing flowers and landscapes with his camera. He will be the speaker at the next meeting of the Western Pennsylvania Lensshooters Camera club at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 at the Peters Township Public Library. Agnew has traveled from coast to coast photographing the most beautiful parts of the country. He will share some of those images at the meeting.   Members are encouraged to participate in the April photo theme assignment, "window light." Only one print per member, please. In addition, on Saturday, April 27 there will be a club field trip to photograph wildflowers at Cedar Creek Park on Route 51 just off Interstate 70. Homemade Music Kicks off National Library Week at Peters Township Public Library

The fun kicks off April 14.

Visitors to the Peters Township Public Library April 14 will be invited to sing songs, play homemade musical instruments and explore Pennsylvania’s past as they kick off the library’s National Library Week celebration. The library will host Paula Purnell, an award-winning performer and educator, who will demonstrate a host of musical instruments while sharing songs from Pennsylvania’s past in “Homemade Music in Pennsylvania.” This program for the entire family will begin at 2 p.m. and invites audience to members bring along a sturdy plastic water/soda bottle to create your own personal instrument.
