Spring Means Seedlings, Sprouts and Sustainability at Local Farms

Whether they are in the city or country, there are places near home where you can find fresh produce—or get seedlings to grow your own.

To every thing there is a season—and we are in the season of planting. Despite the frost warnings this week, May is the time when many plants take root. And not far behind are the early harvests. There are a number of local farms that provide a variety of seedlings and sprouts, produce, and other products as the growing season progresses. Grocery Chains Offering 20-Cent Gas Perks

Giant Eagle and Shop 'n Save are participating until May 29.

Giant Eagle and Shop 'n Save customers are offering a gasoline promotion through Wednesday, May 29. Customers who spend $50 using a Giant Eagle Advantage Card at Pittsburgh-area Giant Eagle stores, including the Giant Eagle on Washington Road, will receive double fuelperks! at GetGo fuel and convenience store locations. In a similar promotion, Shop 'n Save shoppers will receive 20 cents off per gallon of gas for every $50 they spend on groceries. The promotions come just in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, when millions are expected to travel the nation’s highways. Sun Chevrolet, Three Rivers Corvette Club Hosting Car Show

Proceeds from the all-American car show will benefit the local food bank.

Sun Chevrolet of McMurray and the Three Rivers Corvette Club are teaming up to bring the community an all-American car show over the Memorial Day weekend. The show will take place at Sun Chevrolet (located on state Route 19 just north of Valley Brook Road) on Sunday, May 26 and is open to all American-made cars. Spectators are welcome and may attend at no cost. Those entering a car are asked to make a donation of $10. Proceeds will benefit the local food bank. The gates will open at 9 a.m. and the show starts at 10 am. The first 100 cars will receive a dash plaque. Peters Council Greenlights Development of New Restaurant

Peters Township Council this week unanimously approved a conditional-use application for the development Fiori's.

Peters Township is one step closer to getting a new Italian sit-down restaurant. Council this week unanimously approved a conditional-use application submitted by Fiorentino Moscatiello to develop his restaurant—Fiori's Pizza and Italian Restaurant—at 3801 Washington Road. This will be the second Fiori's location in the South Hills. The first is located on Capital Avenue in Brookline. However, the approval came with 10 conditions. They include: The building—fomerly a bank—will be modified to enclose two drive-thru tell lanes, turning the former lobby into the main dining area and making two former offices a kids' area for birthday parties and other functions. The Fresh Market Looking to Fill Two Dozen Positions

The Mt. Lebanon grocery store's 'Interview Day' is next week.

The site of the old Roth Carpet building in Mt. Lebanon has quickly gone from a pile of rubble to a beautiful brick building on the corner of Route 19 and Connor Roads. The building is a new European-style specialty grocery store, called The Fresh Market, and officials there are looking to fill more than two dozens positions. A variety of jobs are available. An assistant front end manager, seafood specialist and cheese specialist are among the opportunities open. Some part-time work is also needed. Click here for a look at all the job listings. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC Opening New Location in South Hills

Children's South has outgrown its Bethel Park location.

The new Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC celebrated its new location with a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday morning. Children's South is set to relocate from its current location in Bethel Park to South Fayette in October 2014. Christopher Gessner, president of Children’s Hospital, said they've outgrown the Bethel Park facility and are excited about the visibility and accessibility of their new South Fayette location, which is near the Bridgeville exit of Interstate 79 at 100 Hickory Grade Road. Currently there is a vacant movie theater sitting on the property. Ryan Eggleston, South Fayette Township manager, said it's still not known if the building will be demolished or renovated.
