The two will be the only candidates on the ballot in November—with a pair of seats open.
Unofficial election results show that Valarie Costanzo and Mike Lucas secured both the Democratic and Republican nominations in the race for Washington County Common Pleas judge. Costanzo, a district judge in Cecil, is leading on the Republican side with 20.9 percent of the votes cast—or 3,333 votes. Lucas has the second-highest number of Republican votes with 3,209, or 20.2 percent. On the Democrat side, Lucas won by a slim margin. Unofficial results show he recieved with 25.8 percent of the votes cast—or 7,847 votes. Costanzo received the second-most votes with 7,803 votes. Also on the Democrat side, Alan Benyak received 3,962 votes, Blane Black received 3,409 votes, Charles Kurowski recieved 2,777 votes, Lane Turturice received 2,058 …
Washington County Elections Director Larry Spahr said election results should be tabulated by 11:30 p.m.
Washington County Elections Director Larry Spahr said his department is dealing with the normal glitches that come with a primary election. There were some battery malfunctions, there were some voting machines that needed to be rebooted, and there were some registered Independents who attempted to cast ballots. "We're just having our normal problems," he said. While no major problems were reported in Peters Township, he said, there was one at one of the nearby Canonsburg polling places. Spahr said the doors of the First Street Elementary School polling place were about 20 minutes late opening while the county office rerouted someone to work at the location after nobody showed up. Six of the candidates have cross-filed and are seeking to secure the Democratic and Republican nominations. Current board President Cindy Golembiewski, current Vice President Lori Cuervo and directors David Paul Hvidos and Sue Smith all cross-filed. Newcomers Lisa Anderson and Rebecca Bowman have also cross-filed for the May 21 primary election. Another candidate, Jamison Hardy, is on the ballot as a Republican only. So, who are you voting for? Councilwoman Monica Merrell faces opposition in the May 21 primary election.
Although there are four seats on Peters Township Council up for grabs in the November general election, only one district race will be contested in the primary. Three township residents will be vying for the Republican nomination to a four-year seat in District B. Incumbent Monica Merrell, the president of Vesta Business Services and member of council since 2008, will be facing off against Theodore J. Taylor IV and Michele A. Hvizdos. Taylor is a real estate broker. Hvizdos did not immediately return a message seeking further information on he background. Councilman Stiegel Jr. is seeking the Republican nomination for the open four-year at-large seat. In District A, Councilman David M. Ball is seeking re-election. He is the only candidate …

Six of the candidates have cross-filed, and are seeking to secure the Democratic and Republican nominations. Current board President Cindy Golembiewski, current vice president Lori Cuervo and directors David Paul Hvidos and Sue Smith all cross-filed. Eight candidates are seeking nomination for one of two open seats on the Washington County Court of Common Pleas bench. All eight candidates have cross-filed for the May 21 primary. Mike Lucas, of Carroll Township, currently serves Washington County as First Assistant District Attorney. Lucas, who lives in Carroll Township with his wife, Anna Giordano, and their three daughters, serves as the lead homicide prosecutor in Washington County. According to his campaign website, he has "gained convictions in more homicide cases than any other prosecutor in our county over the past 16 years."
