Get Out: Light Up Night, Breakfast(s), Free Concert

Where/When: Downtown Pittsburgh, 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday
Why Go?: The 51st Duquesne Light Light Up Night will kick off this Friday in Point State Park with a Santa Spectacular! The evening will be capped off by lighting of the Legendary 80′ Duquesne Light Tree, followed by the Macy’s Fireworks to Music Finale! Stroll through the city side of Point State Park after 5 p.m. and enjoy treats and activities for kids of all ages! Saturday night will begin with concerts in Market Square beginning at noon. Other activities include a skating performance at the Rink at PPG, pictures with Sugar Plum Fairies at 5th Ave. and a horse drawn candlelight carriage parade. Why Go?: Join the library for a special evening of talent, food and fun during our first-ever Open Mic Night at the library! Share your music, comedy, poetry and storytelling skills. Students in grades 6 to 12 should register at the Teen Desk or email youngadultlibrarian@ptlibrary.org if you’re interested in performing. Walk-ins are welcome, too!

Why Go?: For the 42nd year, The Bible Chapel men will be hosting their Thanksgiving Breakfast. Come join them with more than 500 men as they share good food, fellowship and give thanks for their blessings. The speaker, Lt. Col. John W. Groth (USAFR Ret.), served 21 years as a USAF Chaplain and was named Chaplain of the Year by the USAF in 2005. In 2007, John was made an honorary Chief Master Sergeant by the 512th AW Chief’s Council, only the second officer in the 50-year history of the wing to receive this honor. He’s traveled in and out of Iraq and the Middle East supporting our troops. His last six years on active duty were as Chaplain to the men and women working in the Department of Defense’s Port Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base.

Why Go: The cheerleaders will host an "All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast" in O'Brien Hall. Tickets can be purchased from any high school cheerleader or at the door. The breakfast will also feature a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, pancake decorating contest, flip a flapjack contest and much more!

Why Go?: Support the Library by bringing to Barnes & Noble at South Hills Village this Saturday—the library will receive a percentage of the sales. Any purchase is counted, including purchases of cafe items and the NOOK. A variety of groups will be performing throughout the afternoon, including a contest based on the book "Ultimate Pittsburgh Trivia, 1,000 answers to: What Makes Pittsburgh So Interesting?" by Dane Topich. At 1 p.m., the National Honor Society students will compete against a team of athletes in the Brains vs. Brawn contest. At 2 p.m., the winning team will compete against a faculty team. There will also be performances and presentations by various instrumental, vocal, drama and art groups. New this year is also the option of purchasing items online.

Why Go?: Bring the family to the Fall Family Matinee! The Little Lake Theatre presents "Pinkalicious" based on the novel by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann. "Pinkalicious" loves all things PINK! What is a family to do when Pinkalicious eats too many pink cupcakes and develops a very rare case of Pinkatitous?

Why Go?: A Vendor and Craft Show to Benefit Relay For Life of Peters Township, American Cancer Society, will be held at the Finleyville Community Center. Homemade crafts, vendor items, Chinese auction and 50/50 drawing will be held. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase. Military Connections, a nonprofit organization that ships care packages to troops, will also be collecting items at the show. A complete list of needed items can be found at

Why Go?: A Bethel Park veteran needs your help! Mike Trout has served our country for more than 31 years. Mike was a Master Sergeant in the US Marines. He survived all sorts of hazardous and critical situations while in the Marine Corps. Mike was awarded the Bronze Star for his valor in combat. Now Mike needs your help! Mike was critically burned in an unfortunate explosion in his house on June 29, 2011. Mike is now fully disabled due to injuries he received in the explosion and is unable to work. Mike has no local family so his close friends have organized this spaghetti dinner benefit to help him return to a normal life in his home. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at Evey Hardware, Video Doc Productions and Judy Murtaugh Dance Studio.

Why Go?: In the shadow of their successful tour of Italy last summer, the young musicians of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra now look to Germany and Russia for musical inspiration. Music Director Lawrence Loh will lead the 95-member Orchestra in the most recognizable symphony ever written, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Shakespeare's famous characters will come to life in the Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky. PSO Associate Conductor Thomas Hong will conduct the rousing opener Ruslan & Ludmilla by Glinka. Now in it's 65th season, PYSO continues its tradition of presenting free concerts at Heinz Hall.
