Get Out: Book Talk, Christmas Concert and Gingerbread House Contest

Check out these 10 events in Peters Township this weekend.

Where?/When?: , 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday
Why Go?: A new book by professor of education and chair of the education department of Washington and Jefferson College explores the student and teaching experiences of presidents and first ladies from George and Martha Washington to Barack and Michelle Obama. Dr. James McMurtry Longo will premier his new book “From Classroom to White House: The Presidents and First Ladies as Students and Teachers” at the Peters Township Public Library. A book signing will follow the event. Seating is limited and registration is requested. Where?/When?: Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2 p.m. on Saturday
Why Go?: Come welcome the holidays with an afternoon concert by the Char Val Singers! Under the direction of Mary Helen Barr, the chorus will sing old favorites, a classical piece and beautiful lesser known Christmas songs.  A reception follows the concert.

Where?/When?: , 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday
Why Go?: This outdoor interactive walk commemorates the walk Mary and Joseph made long ago. Stroll through Rome and see Caesar and his soldiers, visit Joseph of Nazareth in his carpenter shop and Mary visited by the Angel. Journey to Bethlehem with them, passing prophets and shepherds in the woods. Visit the Bethlehem marketplace for cider and snacks. Don't let the innkeeper turn you away, the manger behind the innhouses a very special family. It's Our Redeemer's Christmas gift to the community. This event is open to everyone.

Where?/When?: , 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday
Why Go?: The Peters Township Library welcomes for a Gingerbread House Making Contest. The event will coincide with the Sponsored by The Pie Place, participants will be supplied with a gingerbread house, icing, and all the fixings to create a one-of-a-kind holiday decoration. Cost is $15 for each house. Entry forms are available at the library's circulation desk. Proceeds benefit the library.

Why Go?: If you are a parent, teacher or librarian struggling to find ways to motivate young children to read, three local teachers may have some of the answers you are seeking in their newly released book “Personalized Reading” It’s a Piece of Pie.” Nancy Hobbs, Kristen Sacco and Myra R. Oleynik will visit the Peters Township Public Library to discuss the PIE program featured in the book. Copies of Personalized Reading: It’s a Piece of Pie, normally sold for $35, will be available at the event or to order for the special price of $25, cash or checks made payable to “Friends of the Peters Township Public Library.”

Where?/When?: , 1 p.m. on Sunday
Why Go?: South Hills Junior Orchestra will perform at a Benefit Concert at Boyce Middle School in Upper St. Clair. The theme of the event is Holiday Music and Giving, and the student members of the orchestra will conduct and play seasonal carols such as Sleigh Ride, Chanukah Celebration, Joy to the World, Deck the Halls and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The concert is a fundraiser for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, the Upper St. Clair School District Performing Arts and specifically the Boyce Theatre. The organization is requesting that those who attend the concert and all SHJO members bring food items as a donation to the Food Bank. In addition, monetary gifts will be used to help purchase a new piano for Boyce Middle School. The Boyce Middle School would like to raise $6000 for an upright piano for music performances.

Where?/When?: , 4 p.m. on Sunday
Why Go?: The Academy of Dance by Lori presents "A Magical Holiday Dance Spectacular." Join Clara and her brother on a magical trip through your favorite holiday stories. Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa's elves take you on a wonderful trip. This production highlights your favorite holiday characters through wonderful dancing. The best of ballet but a lot of jazz combine to entertain the whole family. The story ends with Pittsburgh's own "Rockerettes" in a magical fun-filled event.

Why Go?: Come join in a musical celebration of Christmas with The Bible Chapel Worship Choir and Friends! Tickets are free and available for pickup in the Chapter 2 Bookstore. A love offering will be taken for The City Mission. Bring the whole family, bless The City Mission and lift your voice and heart.
