Get Out: 'The Nutcracker,' Caroling & Holiday Party

A festive weekend in Peters Township, and surrounding communities.

Where/When: , 7 p.m. on Friday
Why Go?: Bring the family to a fun night in the Youth Hall. The church will gather to watch Rio while enjoying popcorn and drinks. Children are encouraged to bring pillows and sleeping bags to make themselves comfortable on the floor.

Where?/When?: , 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday
Why Go?: The Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company presents "The Nutcracker." Bring the whole family to enjoy this classic holiday production. The performance will be held on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. on the stage at the Upper St. Clair Theater. There will be an additional 2 p.m. performance on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4. Where/When: Pottery Barn Kids at the Galleria, 10 a.m. on Saturday
Why Go?: The National Geographic Little Explorers Club is coming to Pottery Barn Kids at the Galleria in Mount Lebanon. This week, the club will focus on all things polar bears! Children, ages 3 and up, will learn all about these big cats through hands-on activities, songs and more! Children will receive a badge for each event they attend. Call 412-344-1615 to register.

Why Go?: It’s the Fifth Annual Candlelight Soup and Stroll featuring a 19th Century Christmas. You can dine on a hearty supper of homemade soups, breads and desserts. Stroll the National Register Landmark (circa 1816 house & winning grounds) and visit the 1780s restored Log Cabin. Enjoy Dulcimer music by Mary Ellen Stoops and take a photo with Father Christmas! Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Why Go?: Bring the whole family to the 2010 film “The Christmas Bunny” starring Florence Henderson. A sad and lonely foster child finds a lost bunny who is hurt Christmas Eve. There will be a silent auction and reception before the screening.

Where?/When?: Peters Township Neighborhoods, 1:30 p.m. on Sunday
Why Go?: The McMurray Rotary Club and students will spend an afternoon of Christmas caroling throughout Peters Township. To meet its fundraising goal, the group is asking for a $10 donation per household. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Where?/When?: The Oliver Miller Homestead, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday
Why Go?: The Oliver Miller Homestead will celebrate Scots Sunday, a fun-filled day that pays tribute to Oliver Miller’s Scottish heritage. The homestead will feature dancing, games, food and talents. The Scots Dancers will perform traditional dances in the newly constructed barn, and guests will be invited to join in the fun. A bonfire will add to the atmosphere. A Scots Tea will be on display in the Keeping Room, and food will be prepared in the open hearth fireplace.

Where?/When?: , 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday
Why Go?: The Community Recreation Center will be holding a Frosty's Fun House as part of Light Up Night. Let your little artist make a masterpiece you will cherish forever. Children ages 10 and under are invited. Parents remain with their children during the event.
Pricing: $5 Resident/$8 Non-Resident (ages 10 and under)

Where?/When?: , 6 p.m. on Sunday
Why Go?: Join the Peters Township Public Library for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Party, held in partnership with the Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department. Festivities will include lighting and decorating the outdoors township tree at 6 p.m., followed by holiday caroling. Refreshments, visits with Santa, and holiday crafts for children will also be offered in the library.
