The Clarks' lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Scott Blasey, a Peters resident, read "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss—one of his favorite books—to the children, including his three young daughters Sofia, Ava and Gracelyn.

Following his intriguing rendition, he delighted the audience with his voice and guitar—he sang a song the library requested entitled, "Light and Day" by The Polyphonic Spree.

Kids then returned back to the first floor meeting room to get crafty—including the construction of a Living Necklace.

Sisters Angela and Catherine Mavrich, of Peters, were instructed by one of the Peters Township Public Library GO Green Club members on making this fascinating DIY kit.

You simply wet a cotton ball with water and place it and a few seeds (radish seeds were used Sunday) in a mini plastic bag—the size of a jewelry bag. Then, you poke a hole in the bag and string a piece of yarn, knotting it at the end to form the necklace. The heat from your body makes the sprouts grow in 5-7 days.

There were useful handouts on recycling and cute paper projects, including a scavenger hunt, for the kids encouraging water and energy conservation.

Dr. Candy DeBerry, a professor at Washington & Jefferson College, had myriad handouts on safe gardening and plenty of giveaways were provided—including Patch water bottles, CFL lights bulbs and a sunflower plant.

Chuck Logsdon was also there to discuss how to care for your lawn organically.

The film "Bag It!" was shown on the second floor and a free reusable tote from was distributed after—one per family. Empty ink cartridges were collected to be recycled in a bin in the main lobby.

Library director Pier Lee said this is the third Earth Day celebration the library has hosted.

"It's a very simple concept," she said. "To save the Earth."

She said she wants Peters children to be aware at an early age, which is the purpose of the celebration, she said.

The day's festivities were planned by the GO Green Club. The library has begun offering registrations for a three-day GO Green Camp for Kids on June 12-14. Details and sign-up forms are available at PTPL.
