Mural At VFW Will Honor Wounded War Hero

Editor's Note: The story has been updated to correct the date of the event.

Scott LoBaido looked at the cloud-dotted sky and said he'd have to hustle to finish his mural before rain was expected to fall.

LoBaido, of New York worked throughout the day to paint a huge American flag mural on the VFW Post 764 in McMurray as a tribute to an injured war veteran.

The rain held off while he finished the painting, which the post commander said was "just beautiful."

A motorist pulled in an admired the work, saying out the window, "Wow. Just wow."

The community is invited to attend the formal unveiling Thursday, when wounded war hero Sgt. Doug Vitale will visit.

The mural was arranged through Tunnels to Towers, a nonprofit that is raising money to build a smart home for Vitale and his wife, who is a Peters Township High School alumna.

Vitale will arrive around 11 a.m. Thursday, and a barbecue will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
