Peters Township, You're Invited: Help Welcome Home a War Hero

You're invited to attend a ceremony celebrating the homecoming of Sgt. Doug Vitale, who hopes to have a smart home built in Peters Township.

After spending nearly two years at the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Program in Tampa, Fla., for serious wounds from stepping on an improvised explosive device on Sept. 25, 2011, USMC  Sgt. Doug Vitale will arrive back in Pittsburgh for the first time since his injuries to a hero’s welcome Saturday.  

A motorcade escort will then proceed to VFW Post 764 in McMurray, where a community ceremony will take place honoring Vitale at approximately.

And local folks are invited to attend that ceremony, which is slated for 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

Vitale’s return will kick off a full week of celebrations that include: an American Flag mural dedication, the unveiling of Vitale's new smart home design, as well as a presentation from representatives of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers thanking the man for his service.

The "welcome home” week will culminate in a benefit concert by actor Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band Aug. 9 at Stage AE.  

Proceeds from the benefit concert will go toward building a smart home for Vitale and Alexis Vitale in Peter’s Township.
