Upper St. Clair CRC to Host Second Annual Lifeguard Showdown

The competition is a chance for lifeguards to showcase their skills.

Lifeguards everywhere have pulled out their sunblock, whistles and bathing suits from last summer for a new season of protecting public swimmers.

in Upper St. Clair (CRC) will be holding its Second Annual Lifeguard Showdown—sponsored in part by the local American Red Cross—on July 17.

Lifeguard teams will compete in a series of seven events, including a written skills test, swim relay, drills and CPR/AED skill tests. There will be four individuals judging the competition to ensure that everything adheres to the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training standards and guidelines.

Lifeguards can use this opportunity to showcase their skills and see who the top lifeguards are in the Pittsburgh area.

“Participating in the Lifeguard Showdown will prepare lifeguards for a potential emergency situation,” said Christopher Biswick, aquatics supervisor for the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park. “It is a great way for lifeguards to see their skills in action. They will be surprised by what they know and how quickly and efficiently they can react.”

All participating teams must consist of three certified lifeguards and should have at least one female member. All-female teams are also acceptable. All lifeguards will receive a T-shirt and the winners will be awarded with prizes. The cost per team will be $60 with the proceeds benefiting .

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and teams must be registered by July 11. To register or get additional information, please contact Christopher Biswick at 412-221-1099, ext. 615.

This event is sponsored by the American Red Cross through donation of equipment and training guidelines. To learn more about your local red cross, visit swpa.redcross.org or call 412-263-3100.

The Community and Recreation Center employs 80 lifeguards. Many of them are back working for their third summer at the facility. Biswick estimates 80 percent of the lifeguards live in Upper St. Clair.
