Artist Honors America with Betsy Ross Flag Mosaic

Rachel Sager Lynch has been working with natural stone and a mosaic medium for more than 15 years, and chose to remember Sept. 11 through her talent.

“My art directly reflects my history,” said Rachel Sager Lynch, a native of western Pennsylvania who’s been influenced largely by images of river barges, smokestacks, coal mines and heavy machinery.

Mosaic is her medium, which she said offers a universe of freedom and self-expression.

In honor of Sept. 11, Lynch has created a 13-by-20 inch Betsy Ross flag mosaic, made of Smalti, vintage Italian ceramic from Venice. She completed the project in a few weeks.

Her Betsy Ross piece will be on display at Palazzo 1837 Ristorante for The Marcellus Geology Series, a solo exhibition in contemporary mosaic art (by Lynch) to “celebrate the grit, the character, the beauty, that is…southwestern Pennsylvania.”

Her Marcellus mosaic pieces will be showcased on the day of remembrance.

“I’m not getting highly-political,” she said. “It’s just an appropriate time to remember the day that was.”

She typically travels doing local geology shows and said it’ll be a “nice event for people on that day—experiencing something positive. It’s about respect and honor.”

The event is Sept. 11 from 6-10 p.m., and features complimentary appetizers and a cash bar in the tavern.

Lynch’s brother, Matt, owner and operator of Palazzo, said the event is open to all those who appreciate art, people in the Marcellus industry, or just anyone who enjoys a relaxing evening of socializing over cocktails. Wine, and Belgian and German beers will be available, he said.

As for the art of mosaic, Lynch said she sees America’s appreciation for it growing, “elevating the medium.”
