Get Out: 'Tapestries of Hope,' Youth Soccer Night & 18th Century Concert

Here's what is happening around Peters Township, and surrounding areas, this weekend. What are you planning?

1.
Where/When: , Thursday, 5 p.m.
Why Go?: This event will provide a great opportunity for "Mingling & Marketing," while enjoying delicious food, spirits and a few dance demonstrations by the Arthur Murray dance instructors! Make your reservation by calling 724-942-4707.

2.
Where/When: Hollywood Theater Dormont, Thursday, 6-10 p.m.
Why Go?: at a screening of the documentary, Tapestries of Hope. This award-winning film by Michealene Risley exposes the myth, widely held in Africa, that raping a virgin cures a man of HIV. In the voices of young girls and Makoni herself, it also details Makoni's struggles and triumphs in creating the Girl Child Network of shelters for abused girls. The celebration of hope begins with appetizers and music at 6 p.m. The film shows at 7 p.m. and there will be Q&A with Makoni afterward.  

All proceeds from this all-volunteer event go to the Girl Child Network. Most of the event organizers are from neighborhoods, businesses and churches in the South Hills.

Where/When: Scout Building on Thomas Road, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Why Go?: The Troop and Pack 1393 Open House will be held at the Scout Building on Thomas Road, across from . Scouting is for boys from grades 1 to 12. It provides fun, excitement and outdoor opportunity. The program is designed to develop family and community relationships. Scouting is designed to help the boys develop into productive young men. Scouting is about "doing your best" and "finishing the race" rather than always winning, and is about helping others. Troop and Pack 1393 are fortunate to have more than two centuries of experience among the leadership, and includes many Eagle Scouts as leaders. The leadership is responsible to provide positive role models, examples of good character, and is pleased to give back to the youth what we have been fortunate to obtain in our experiences. This open house is an opportunity to get involved and sign up for Scouting.

Why Go?: This is the first class of a four-part series. during four sessions. McNutt has been a photojournalist for the Observer-Reporter newspaper for the past 41 years and a former adjunct professor at Washington and Jefferson College for 22 years. Students will learn how to see photo possibilities, compose better images and how to use a camera more effectively.

Where/When: Pottery Barn Kids at the Galleria, Saturday, 10 a.m.
Why Go?: The National Geographic Little Explorers Club is coming to Pottery Barn Kids at the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon. This week, the club will focus on all things tigers! Children, ages 3 and up, will learn all about these big cats through hands-on activities, songs and more! Children will receive a badge for each event they attend. Call 412-344-1615 to register.

Where/When: American Legion Rider of Post 639, Saturday, 10 a.m.
Why Go?: American Legion Rider of Post 639 Claysville will hold a Fox and Hound Bike Run with all proceeds benefit the Pets for Vet program. All bikes, cars and trucks welcome! Registration is from 10-11 a.m. The Fox leaves at 11:01 a.m.!
Pricing: $10 per person

Where/When: , Saturday, 6 p.m.
Why Go?: The Peters Township Boys and Girls Soccer Team presents Youth Night. The boys team will play against . Junior Varsity starts at 6 p.m. and varsity starts at 7:30 p.m. Any soccer player wearing their Peters team shirt will get free admission to the game and receive a free gift!

Where/When: , Saturday, 7 p.m.
Why Go?: Woodville Plantation presents a special 18th century music concert featuring George Balderose and Richard Hughes. Guests are invited to enjoy an evening of authentic 18th century Scots-Irish music in the historic surroundings or the parlor at Woodville Plantation. George Balderose and Richard Hughes are nationally renowned musicians and experts in Scottish, Irish and Appalachian music. Both musicians are members of the group Road to the Isles. A wine and cheese reception will follow the concert. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event.

Where/When: , Sunday, 12:30 p.m.
Why Go?: Casting is open to all interested dancers and adults. A parent or guardian must fill out forms and attend a 20-minute meeting while their dancer is being cast. .
