UPDATE: A 2012 Guide to South Hills Area Fish Frys

It's Friday, which means fish sandwiches and other goodies!

This week commences the Lenten season, which also means it's time for the return of fish frys in the South Hills area! We've compiled a list of churches, volunteer fire departments and other organizations. 

Remember: It's never too late to submit your group's fish fry information. Feel free to do so in the comments.

The 2012 Lenten Fridays are Feb. 24, March 2, March 9, March 16, March 23 and March 30, and Good Friday on April 6.

Peters Township

 will hold its annual fish fry every Friday during Lent (through March 30) in the O’Brien Hall and Pope Benedict Activity Center. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dinner is served from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Takeout is available.

Lunch includes a $9 fried fish sandwich combo (sandwich, fries and coleslaw), fish sandwiches only ($7) and weekly soup specials ($3).

Dinner includes a fried or baked fish with macaroni and cheese or french fries, coleslaw and a beverage ($9). Other options include fish sandwiches ($7), fried shrimp ($10), cheese pizza ($7/pie or $1.50/ slice), weekly soup specials ($3), five pierogies with butter and onions ($5), and haluski ($1.50).

You are also invited to the parish bake sale—supported by one of the parish ministries and organizations each week. Treat yourself to delicious homemade bake goods. Crafts and movies will be available for the kids. The church encourages everyone to bring the whole family, friends and neighbors!

 is hosting a potluck supper at 6:15 p.m. every Wednesday during Lent.

Devotions and learning time for children begins at 6:45 p.m. with worship at 7. Two adult classes will begin at 7:30 p.m.

VFW Post 764 features fish, crab cakes, shrimp, pierogies, haluski, mac & cheese and dinner platters (fish, jumbo shrimp, oyster, crab cake—all platters include baked potato or french fries, cole slaw and a dinner roll) starting at 11:30 a.m. every Friday during Lent.

North Strabane, Canonsburg and Cecil

in Cecil Township will hold its annual fish fry beginning on Ash Wednesday and each Friday during Lent including Good Friday.

The menu features seasoned Panko-breaded cod that is deep fried in heart-healthy tri-fry oil that is cholesterol and trans-fat free. Baked cod or salmon offer other healthy alternatives as its newest item—Maine lobster rolls!

Also on the menu are homemade crab cakes, pan seared scallops, shrimp in a basket, jumbo shrimp, and cabbage and noodles. Side orders of green beans, baked potatoes, French fries, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese are all available along with dinner rolls.

St. Mary’s is located just off state Route 50 in Cecil Township, which is less than 5 miles from the Interstate 79 exit in Bridgeville.

in Canonsburg will hold its annual Lenten fish fry this Friday—and will continue every Friday through March 30. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Business deliveries and take-out orders will be available.

Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual fish fry starting Ash Wednesday and continuing Fridays during Lent. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The menu includes fish sandwiches, shrimp, chicken strips, French fries, coleslaw and homemade desserts. Upper St. Clair and Bethel Park

on East McMurray Road will begin its annual fish fry this Friday and will continue every Friday except Good Friday—April 6.

Options will include fried fish sandwiches, baked fish, soup, shrimp, crab cakes, pierogies, pizza, macaroni and cheese, french fries, haluski and a variety of desserts. Customers can eat in or experience the church's "very quick takeout."

on Fort Couch Road in Bethel Park will also hold a Lenten dinner each Friday of Lent from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. Different varieties of pasta will be featured each week along with various items including baked fish. All items are available for eating in or for takeout. Dinners will be held in the Family Life Center. Funds raised will help pay for the church's new Family Life and Education Center.

on McMillan Road will hold one fish fry on Friday, March 30 for parishioners.

on Mohawk Road will not be hosting any fish frys.

Bridgeville, Collier, Heidelberg and Scott

Fish fry is held every other Friday (2/24, 3/9, 3/23, 4/6) from 4 to 7 p.m.

St. Bernard Catholic Church in Mt. Lebanon will hold a fish fry every Friday during Lent, except for Good Friday, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The dinner will be at Clairvaux Hall, at 311 Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon. For details, call 412-341-1565.

St. Norbert Church in Overbrook will hold a fish fry on Ash Wedesday and every Friday during Lent from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The dinner will be held at Church Hall at 2413 St. Norbert Street in Overbrook. For details, call 412-881-8201.

Baldwin and Whitehall

 debuts its 2012 Fish Fry from 3 to 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. The fry will then run every Friday through the Lenten season. Good Friday (April 6) is the final day for the fry.

Saint Albert's has fried and baked Icelandic cod, including fried cod sandwiches, available for $6 each—or $9 each if ordered with a full dinner—which includes two of the following choices: French fries, potato pancakes, haluski, coleslaw, stewed tomatoes, and macaroni and cheese. Dinner is also served with a bread roll, butter and coffee.

Patrons can also order batches of breaded shrimp, Maryland crab cakes or pierogies for $6 each—or $9 with a full dinner.

On the a la carte menu is New England clam chowder ($2), five-inch cheese pizzas ($2), French fries ($2), macaroni and cheese ($2), coleslaw ($2), haluski ($2), potato pancakes ($2 each), Coca-Cola ($.75), Diet Coca-Cola ($.75), Sprite ($.75), iced tea ($.75), bottled water ($.75) and beer ($2).

 runs its annual fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. (takeout calls from 3 to 6 p.m.) on Fridays from Feb. 24 through March 30.

St. Gabriel’s has fried cod and baked orange roughy sandwiches available for $6.75 each, or $8.50 each (without a sandwich bun) if ordered with a full dinner, which includes either a baked potato, French fries or three pierogies; either coleslaw or applesauce; and a piece of either chocolate or yellow cake. Dinner is also served with a bread roll, butter and either coffee or hot tea. (Substituting a sandwich bun for the bread roll and butter costs an additional $.25.)

Patrons can also order five pieces of shrimp for $6.75 (or $8.50 with a full dinner) or seafood cakes for $3.50 each (or a collection of them for $8.50 with a full dinner).

On the a la carte menu are cheese pizza slices ($1.75 each), French fries ($1.50), macaroni with cheese ($2), coleslaw ($1), haluski ($2), baked potatoes ($1.50 each), pierogies ($.50 each or $5.50 per dozen), applesauce ($.75), cookies ($.25 each), cake pieces ($1 each), soft drinks ($.50 each), bottled water ($1), iced tea ($1), orange drink ($.30), coffee ($.50) and hot tea ($.50).

, on Streets Run Road—one block from Route 51—in Baldwin Borough, will hold fish frys this year from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 and Feb. 24 and from 3 to 7 p.m. (unofficially—still to be determined) on March 9, March 23 and April 6.

Option Independent will serve fish sandwiches for $5 each, or $7 each if ordered with a full dinner, which includes two of the following choices—French fries, haluski, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese.

Patrons can also order a shrimp dinner for $7, which also includes a choice of two sides.

On the a la carte menu are French fries ($1.50), haluski ($1.50), coleslaw ($1.50), macaroni with cheese ($1.50) and desserts ($.75 each). Coffee and hot tea are offered free of charge, but other drinks go for $.75 each.

The fire hall will host a 50-50 raffle during each of its fish frys. Also, orders for Easter flowers will be taken each day, and raffle tickets for a grand prize TV will be sold. The TV will be awarded at the conclusion of Option’s April 6 fry.
