Advanced Cancer Treatment Program Comes to Outpatient Care Center

Patients with all types of cancers and certain benign conditions can now be treated locally in a state-of-the-art radiation facility in Peters Township.

West Penn Allegheny Health System’s nationally recognized Department of Radiation Oncology has opened a new, comprehensive cancer treatment program at the health system’s in Peters Township.

Patients with all types of cancers and certain benign conditions can now be treated at the Outpatient Care Center in a state-of-the-art radiation facility run by some of the region’s preeminent cancer specialists. 

Those experts include radiation oncologists, radiation oncology nurses, certified radiation therapists, physicists and dosimetrists, who work collaboratively to develop and implement a patient’s treatment plan.

Advanced radiation therapies offered at Peters include three-dimensional conformal external beam radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image guided radiation therapy, 4D CT simulation, prostate brachytherapy and extracranial stereotactic body radiation therapy. 

“The majority of cancer care is delivered on an outpatient basis and our advanced and expert cancer program at the Peters Outpatient Care Center covers most of the treatments that patients need to achieve the best possible outcomes,” said David Parda, MD, chairperson of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Cancer Institute at Allegheny General Hospital/West Penn Allegheny Health System. “We are extremely excited to now offer residents of Pittsburgh’s southern communities such convenient access to the complete spectrum of cancer treatment services.”

The radiation oncology program at Peters is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. West Penn Allegheny radiation oncologists who are on staff at the center include Dr. Parda, Daryl Makishi, DO; Russell Fuhrer, MD; Mark Trombetta, MD; Athanasios Colonias, MD; Stephen Karlovits, MD; Alexander Kirichenko, MD, Ph.D, and James Betler, DO.

The Outpatient Care Center also affords patients access to other cancer related services, including surgical and medical oncology, diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI , ultrasound) and pathology/laboratory medicine, as well as support services such as social services and nutrition.
