Newbury Market Continues to Grow

South Fayette business district will have a supermarket and hotel.

Newbury Market, the sprawling commercial and housing development that is being built off Route 50 in South Fayette, announced two anchor tenants for its business district.

The developer, of EQA Landmark Communities, announced a Giant Eagle grocery store and Courtyard by Marriott hotel will open in the reclaimed brownfield site in 2013. There are also plans for an office building and apartment complex in the area, the developer said.

More than 50 homes have been built in the lots overlooking the site, with plans for at least 150 more. The developer hopes to turn the area into a Main Street-style business district just off the Bridgeville exit of Interstate 79.

“Newbury Market’s Main Street will serve as the new center of retail and relaxation for the region’s residents,” said Brett Malky, who is the project developer. “They will find new restaurants, services and stores conveniently located in Allegheny County’s fastest growing community.”

It is uncertain how the plans for a Giant Eagle at Newbury will affect the current grocery store just a few miles away in Chartiers Valley Shopping Center. A company spokesman said it was too soon to determine if that store would close when the new supermarket opens.

The Courtyard by Marriott will offer 125 hotel rooms. The apartment complex, meanwhile will boast 120,000-square feet of office space. There is additional space at the site for other businesses to sprout.

Malky said he hopes the new business tenants will lead to more interest from local residents who want to move into the housing development.

“The strength of our residential home sales and the announcements of Giant Eagle and Courtyard by Marriott are expected to accelerate the discussions we’ve had with both people looking to live at Newbury and national retailers who are also looking to make Newbury Market their home,” Malky said.

The second phase of the housing development is expected to begin at the end of the month. Work on the Newbury Village apartments is expected to being in early 2012.
