Patch Pet of the Month: Loving Lonely Lizzie

Do you have room in your heart and home for Lizzie?

One of the volunteers describes her as a pygmy german shepherd. Lizzie with her portly frame and expressive ears is definitely from solid shepherd stock, but where did those short legs come from?

Perhaps some rugged corgi made a contribution to her special mix!

We will never really know, but we know Lizzie very well. She is a quixotic mix of leading lady in the kennels and easily led when outside on leash. She is jokingly called Lizzie Borden from time to time because her time in a cage has been so long that she no longer deals with the other dogs in her digs very well.

She acts like she has an axe to grind with many of the other female dogs in her midst. Take her outside and she is more of a Liz Taylor, with her beautiful face, her sashay walk and the way she throws herself at anyone that looks her way.

With people, Lizzie is so gentle, affectionate and trusting (it's not unusual for her to go belly up for a short tickle) that it is a mystery why nobody has given her a fair shake or a second look. Her big brown eyes look so sad sometimes.

Lizzie will be easily housebroken. She is fastidious in her kennel whenever possible. She shared her kennel space at one time with a frisky young male who did not let her get the better of him, but since Jack was adopted, Lizzie has been in a kennel alone. She might like another male that meets with her approval, but Lizzie likes to be the only female dog on site. It's one of her diva qualities and she deserves that to be respected.

Recently introduced to a treat-stuffed Kong toy, Lizzie has been pleased to work on it for long periods to retrieve her delicious reward, a respite from the boredom.

In her middle years, Lizzie does not require the exercise regimen that a young dog needs. She will happily walk whenever and wherever and then stop and hang around happy to just have some company. Lizzie is a breeze to walk despite her size, takes treats like a lady and sits when prompted. She is a catch for almost any family whether they are athletes or couch potatoes. Lizzie is up for all of it.
