Protect Your Plants—Freeze Watch Issued for Peters Area

Flowers and plants have started to bloom, but they could freeze Monday night.

Brr! Those daffodils look pretty in front of Peters Township Public Library, but they could freeze overnight.

A freeze warning will be in effect in the Peters Township area from 10 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s, causing a hard freeze—and a big change over what local folks have experienced over the past two weeks.

"A hard freeze means temperatures will be colder than 28 degrees for at least (three) hours," the National Weather Service website indicated. "The unprecedented warmth of the last two weeks has caused trees to blossom and plants to start growing. This sensitive vegetation can be severely impacted by the hard freeze tonight."

Concerned? According to Gardening Know How, you can prevent plants from freezing by covering them with blankets, sheets or sacks to help retain heat. Lightly watering plants a day or two before a freeze also could help because wet soil holds more heat, according to the article.
