The Center for Coalfield
Justice, Protectors of Mingo, and students from Duquesne University are
speaking in Nottingham Township on Saturday, October 12, from 10:00 AM to 2:00
PM. This informational session
will cover details surrounding the application submitted by Ramaco LLC, a
company aiming to construct a coal mine on the pastures and hills of Nottingham
Township’s farmland.
Speakers at this informational
session include staff members from the Center for Coalfield Justice, a scholar
in the environmental science department at Duquesne University, as well as
Duquesne University students studying Philosophy of Technology. The purpose of this event is to educate
the Washington County community, particularly those who would be directly
impacted in Nottingham Township, on the changes this mine would bring to the
area.
The Center for Coalfield Justice
has teamed up with Washington County residents to form the Protectors of Mingo,
an organization dedicated to preserving the quality of life and the healthy
environment of Washington County.
Ramaco LLC plans to construct the coal mine in an area where the waters
of Little Mingo Creek could be polluted by dirty water runoff that will be used
to clean the coal. Little Mingo
Creek flows directly into Mingo Creek, which is an asset to Washington County
and the beautiful Mingo Creek County Park.

The speakers will also educate
the community on the safety concerns surrounding Ramaco LLC. Ramaco is a Kentucky based company
operated by former Massey Coal officials from West Virginia. Massey Coal operated the Upper Big
Branch mine in 2010, which is the subject of an ongoing federal investigation
of the circumstances surrounding the twenty-nine miners who lost their lives.
The Protectors of Mingo is
continuing to add members and grow support. For information on their next meeting
