Free Community Shred Day

FREE COMMUNITY SHRED EVENT AT WASHINGTON COMMUNITY FCU

WASHINGTON, PA – Washington Community Federal Credit Union will offer a free shred event for the community on Saturday, June 28th 2014. The event will take place from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Credit Union’s Meadow Lands location at 440 Racetrack Road.

A mobile shred truck, courtesy of Iron City Workplace Services of Pittsburgh, will be in the Credit Union parking lot throughout the event. Anyone can take advantage of a no-cost opportunity to destroy any sensitive or confidential documents they may have lying around their homes, helping to protect them from fraud and identity theft.

Identity Theft Facts*:

  • About 7% of people age 16 or older were victims of identity theft in 2012
  • The majority of identity theft incidents (85%) involved the fraudulent use of existing account information, such as credit card or bank account information
  • Victims who had personal information used to open a new account or for other fraudulent purposes were more likely than victims of existing account fraud to experience financial, credit, and relationship problems and severe emotional distress

“Members of our community fall prey to identity theft and fraud every day,” said Amanda Lunger, Credit Union Marketing Manager. “We believe in making Washington County a better place to work and live, and by offering this free service we hope to help our members, friends, and neighbors protect themselves from these unfortunate events.”

The Credit Union makes regular efforts to educate their members about identity theft and fraud via their website, washfcu.org; and their Facebook page, facebook.com/washfcu.

Snacks and giveaways will be available at the event, which is free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to limit the materials they bring for shredding to five boxes per car, and to use durable plastic bags when necessary to avoid tearing and potential loss of documents.
