Upcoming Benefit Concert Would Help House a Hero

Cpt. Doug Vitale and his wife hope to raise enough funds to help them build a customized smart house to accommodate his needs after an accident in Afghanistan while deployed.

Cpt. Doug Vitale was leading his squad on patrol on Sept. 25th, 2011 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, causing him to lose both legs above the knee.

He then suffered strokes on both sides of his brain.

Since then, Vitale and his wife Alexis, have been part of the Polytrauma Rehabilitation program for brain injuries in Tampa Florida.

Alexis, a Peters Township High School graduate, and Vitale are hopeful they can build a customized "smart house" in the township so Vitale can live in a home with accommodations to help with his needs.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation—along with numerous donations from the community—is helping the family build the house, but help is still sought from local folks.

How? Attend an upcoming benefit concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at Stage AE in Pittsburgh. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Gary Sinise and The Lt. Dan Band and special guest Danny Rodriguez and the artist Scott Lobaido will be performing.

Lawn tickets cost $35, and VIP pit tickets are $60.
