map mania

What is it with Peters Patch?  Is there no noteworthy news?  Nothing important going on in the area?  The plethora of these silly maps prompts me to hit "delete" as soon as I seen the Peters Patch email in my inbox!

Amen! I used to enjoy getting the Peters Patch email but now I delete it ASAP. There used to be breaking news and info regarding restaurants opening (or closing). News about public issues and events. I also used to tell lots of people about it and tell them to sign-up but now I would not tell my worst enemy. What happened?

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I conjecture that it's either a lack of news (which is doubtful) or a lack of editorial imagination and effort.

Remember that Patch/AOL let many people go last May. Then, in the Fall (Oct?), another major layoff happened. At the first one, there was some consolidation of local editors. At the second one, all the local editors were gone. In other words, there is nobody managing this site. Apparently, there is a regional editor making some decisions on what to load on the page, where to get other stories (e.g. local TV stations). But, as for somebody locally gathering news for Peters Patch, that hasn't happened for close to a year when the Peters editor left. AOL gave Patch by Dec 31 to show profit (Patch has lost money for AOL since its inception -- expenses about twice the revenues for a long, long time). By now, about three months have passed since AOL set the standard, either shut it down, or sell off the sites. Obviously, neither of these have happened. As you can see, there are no local advertisers any longer. Why would anybody buy ads? Perhaps the most startling thing is that the site is not dark.

Here is a story about a partnership deal that AOL is attempting to work out for Patch. http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2014/01/07/aol-ceo-ces/4361773/

And, another mid-December story from AOL, trying to justify Patch remaining alive. http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2013/12/16/aol-patch-ceo/4038897/

Thanks Roger. All good information!

Now that makes total sense! I was unaware of the layoffs/consolidation. I can see now why nothing on here really relates to Peters Township or if it does, it's not anything anyone would really care about. The woman that ran Peters Patch up until a year or so ago was FANTASTIC! Oh well, I guess we just have to wait and see what happens. Thanks for the info!!!!!
