Peters Police Continue Search for Missing Houston Man

Rescue crews are back at Canonsburg Lake Saturday morning to search for Joseph Schneider.

of Canonsburg Lake for a missing Houston man early Saturday, a Washington County 911 supervisor confirmed.

The search began Friday night.

Joseph Schneider, 21, was at a party Friday night with friends at a house next door to , near the overpass on the Canonsburg side of the lake, according to Chief Harry Fruecht.

Four young men jumped into the water to race across the lake. Fruecht said one man turned around and got out. Schneider also turned around, but was not seen after that.

The lake is only 80-100 yards wide at the point where the race took place, Fruecht said. East Bethlehem Scuba Rescue team from Washington County arrived close to 1 a.m. Saturday to help in the search.

The 76-acre Canonsburg Lake, which lies between and  townships, was acquired by the commonwealth in 1958 for public fishing and boating. According to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission website, the lake has been filling with silt and a project to dredge the lake has been estimated to cost between $2 million to $20 million.
