Peters Township Fire Department to Purchase New Engine

The piece of equipment is expected to cost about $425,000.

The Peters Township Fire Department is going through the process of purchasing a new engine—one that is expected to cost about $425,000.

The money will come out of a special account for capital purchases.

Fire Chief Dan Coyle said the department is currently preparing bid specifications for the engine.

He said there are about 400 pages to fill out before the bid can be sent out.

"It's kind of like buying a house," Coyle said of the lengthy process by which the purchase will be made.

Once the bid is awarded, delivery will take between 240 to 270 working days, he said.

The new engine will replace one that was manufactured in 1994.

The department is looking at features for the new engine that would be appropriate for the hilly nature of Peters Township and the surrounding service area.

Coyle said they are looking at higher horse power engines, as well as bigger braking systems.

New engines are also equipped with updates safety features such as airbags, he added.

The old engine will most likely be sold, Coyle said.
