Police: 75-Year-Old Woman Pulls Gun on Officer, Standoff Ensues

Bethel Park police responded to a dispute the woman was having with a neighbor Monday night.

A 75-year-old woman in Bethel Park was involuntarily committed to a hospital this morning after police said she pulled a gun on an officer Monday night and barricaded herself in her home.

Chief John Mackey of the Bethel Park police department said an officer was first called to the 6100 block of Collie Drive at 9:30 p.m. on Monday. Neighbors accused Rhoda Hughes of having some "bright spotlights" shining on their house.

When the officer was speaking to Hughes, he said she pulled a gun on him. As other officers arrived, Hughes barricaded herself inside her home through the night.

After the standoff ended, police found a unloaded gun inside the home. It's not clear if the gun was loaded or not when it was allegedly pulled on the officer.

Hughes is now undergoing a psychological evaluation.

"It's certainly, in Bethel Park, not a daily occurence, and certainly not a common incident that involves a 75-year-old woman. You just never know what can happen and that's why we train our officers to respond to these incidents, no matter who they involve," Chief Mackey said. "We're happy nobody got hurt."
