Thieves Steal 100-Pound Sewer Grates in Peters Neighborhood

Three thefts of stolen sewer grate pieces were reported to police recently—worth an estimated $1,725.

are investigating after someone stole 11 ½ 100-pound sewer grate pieces in an "underdeveloped" neighborhood in Peters, they said. 

The thefts were reported Sept. 18, Sept. 23 and Oct. 12, and are all in the same vicinity, according to police.

“Someone has taken multiple grates,” said Chief Harry Fruecht. “They are two-piece sewer grates, each weighing 100 pounds. To date, we’re missing $1,725 worth of those.”

Chief Fruecht believes the thieves are selling the grates for scrap.

“We are missing 1,150 pounds worth,” he said. “Who knows what the market is on scrap steel, but there are some dollars there.”
