Civil Air Patrol Cadets Lead Mini Boot Camp

Members from Washington Squadron 601 volunteered at Bower Hill Elementary's Family Fun and Fitness Night.

Local Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members from Washington Squadron 601 volunteered recently at ’s Family Fun and Fitness Night.

Cadets and senior members from area CAP squadrons organized activities in the form of a mini boot camp—designed to be both fun and educational for Bower Hill students.

A variety of stations included landing model airplanes on a runway, physical fitness contests, drill and ceremony practice, and games timing how fast you could put on your uniform.

“This was our third year supporting their program," she said. "We look forward to next year."

Lt. Parker’s son, Cadet Capt. Adam Parker, a sophomore at and member of Washington Squadron 601, assisted students throughout the event.

“Working at Bower Hill night is one of my favorite activities that I get to participate in through CAP,” he said. “Seeing these little kids go through our 'boot camp' and come out with a sense of accomplishment, is one of the greatest things that I can imagine. It also gets information about CAP out to the community, which is just as important.”

Washington Squadron 601 is the county’s local chapter of the Civil Air Patrol—an all-volunteer, civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force that provides emergency services, search and rescue and youth leadership programs.

Meetings are held weekly on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, 125 Goodridge Road, Washington, PA.
