PennDOT Plans Minimal Construction Over Memorial Day Weekend

Liberty Tunnel will be closed Friday and Monday nights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

PennDOT is—mercifully—planning minimal highway and bridge improvements in Allegheny County over the Memorial Day weekend.

If long-term restrictions are already in place for your favorite routes, however, those are not changing.

The Liberty Tunnel might slow your travels if you are traveling Friday or Monday nights. It will be closed in both directions from 10 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday. No closures will occur on Saturday or Sunday nights.

The tunnel will close again Monday night when the normal Sunday-Friday 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly closure schedule resumes.

As always, you can check traffic conditions on major roads before you start your motor simply by logging on to 511pa.com or by calling 511 from any phone.

The 511 system also automatically feeds Twitter accounts with information such as incidents, construction notices and weather alerts.

The Pittsburgh/Southwestern-region account, www.twitter.com/511PAPittsburgh, covers Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

You can receive real-time updates if you follow PennDOT's tweets—just remember to check your phone before you put your car in gear. Trying to check while you are driving is, well, dangerous.

PennDOT reminds motorists to call the construction hotline at 412-429-6035 for information and current activities on the Parkway East, Parkway West, Parkway North, I-79 and Route 28.

Weather is a key—sometimes the work is postponed if bad weather is in the forecast.

PennDOT's District 11 offers specialized information for certain roads and projects.
