Poll: Peters School District to Increase Security at High School

A district spokesperson told parents and students Tuesday that officials are actively seeking a school resource officer to provide a uniformed security presence.

On Tuesday, spokeswoman Shelly Belcher sent an email to parents and students. The email stated that the district has plans to increase security at . 

The effort backs the school's "proactive approach to providing a safe and secure environment." 

Belcher wrote that the district is working with to secure an officer, who will be on-site for the remainder of this school year.

It is stated that the school board and administration will continue to work with —and review the current budget—to determine if the position can be maintained long-term. 

The discussion to fulfill this position has continued for nearly two years. Belcher said the need for it is not a result of any incident or threat to the school or staff members. Simply, she said the district strongly believes that having a school resource officer will aid preventative security efforts and be an asset to students and staff.

Peters administrators have worked with police, private security firms and written grants to help fund this position.
