Peters to Be Host for Electronics Recycling Program

Collection point will help township residents to comply with new DEP electronics disposal law.

Within the next few months or possibly weeks, Peters Township residents will be able to dispose of used computers, monitors and televisions under a new agreement adopted by township council this week.

Council entered into a contract with e-Loop LLC, a Plum Township company in Allegheny County, that provides disposal services for electronic equipment in communities throughout the region.

Under terms of the contract, e-Loop will pay the township two cents for every pound of electronic equipment it collects. Recycling bins will be located at the Peters Township Department of Public Works. E-Loop will also have the ability to match any offer from competing companies.

The council’s action comes in preparation for a new state law that goes into effect in January, where the Department of Environmental Protection will ban the dumping of electronic equipment in landfills. Currently, some trash haulers will dispose of electronic equipment, but customers must pay for the service.

The drop-off will be free of charge.

Township Manager Michael Silvestri told council that e-Loop will provide the disposal bins and will handle all of the recycling.

According to the company website, e-Loop says it provides services to a number of different clients, and is a DEP-permitted recycling facility.

Currently, e-Loop operates five different recycling centers in western Pennsylvania. Peters Township will be the sixth.

Silvestri said the recycling bins will be available to all Peters Township residents as well as those from other communities—at least through the beginning of the program.

The startup date for the collection program has not yet been determined. Silvestri said the exact location of the bins is also to be determined, but will be at the public works department on Bebout Road.

The township will announce the start-up date and collection point on its website. Stay tuned to Patch for further updates.
