Public Hearing in Place for Revised Marcellus Shale Ordinance

Dates set for drilling and crematory public hearings; work session to refine drilling ordinance also set.

Peters Township Council has chosen July 18 as the date for a public hearing on a revised Marcellus Shale drilling ordinance.

The council set the date at Monday night's regular meeting—also setting June 6 as the date for a work session to refine the ordinance pre-hearing. The session will be solely devoted to work on the ordinance with no public comment portion.

“The revised ordinance is significantly different with more restrictions than the original ordinance,” said township Manager Michael Silvestri. He did not discuss specifics about the new ordinance.

Silvestri said it will be advertised and made available for public review sometime early next week on the township website.

Two members of the public appeared before council Monday night to express concerns about drilling.

Ann Shaner read from an edition of "Public Health Quarterly" published by the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, which reported on the effects of gas drilling. She said she would make copies of the report available to council members.

Township resident Scott Langlois told council that many residents still don’t understand gas drilling and how it will affect them.

In other news, council announced the public hearing on the crematory ordinance will be held Tuesday, May 31.
