Cross Country Teams to Inaugurate New Track Courses in Peterswood Park

Additionally, a new circuit training course may be in the works, and would be available for general community use once constructed.

Tuesday, the and cross country teams will inaugurate their newly-designed 3K and 5K courses in .

The teams have used the park for courses in the past, however, an effort to develop safer and softer running surfaces was put forth recently.

The collaborative effort was spearheaded by Peters resident John Knabb, who has been involved in distance running for more than 40 years, and has been instrumental in designing other local courses.

When middle school Coach Jayson Zeminski and high school Coach Justin Pinto were shown the initial path for the new courses, they were very enthusiastic about the improvements they would offer, Knabb said.

Parks and Recreation personnel, under the supervision of Jay Mizia, did the initial widening and clearing of the paths. The boosters and team members then did final grooming and clearing of remaining roots, stumps and vines to ensure the ground's good running surface.

The improved course starts in Peterswood Park at Field #5, and will offer spectators at least five views of passing runners—a unique and desirable trait rarely experienced in cross country, Knabb said.

The cross country teams and boosters are strongly encouraging the community to utilize the new portions of the trails behind the amphitheater and parallel to the Arrowhead Trail.

These portions are perfect for dog walkers, mountain bikers, runners and families who wish to get off of the asphalt and into a wooded setting, he said.

According to Knabb, regular use of these trails will help maintain the quality for competitions.

Take note: Dog walkers are simply asked to clean up after their pets as they would in other parts of the park.

Future plans for the new course include the potential addition of a strength training course, which would offer stations for pull-ups, inclined sit-ups, push-ups, etc., a release states.

The nearest known circuit training course is in South Park. If added, this course, once constructed, would be available for general community use.
