Education Foundation Awards Grants to Teachers

More than $9,700 was granted to Peters Township teachers to help with their efforts in the classroom.

The Peters Township Education Foundation is proud to announce the winners of the 2013 Granting Educators Opportunities Grants.

This year, the PTEF will provide total funding of more than $9,700 to support
education in classrooms across the district. The foundation received 13 grant proposals this year and—thanks to support of its staff and parents—will be able to fulfill six of those proposals.

District officials said that while all of the proposals were "worthwhile and showed the tremendous dedication of our staff to improving education in our classrooms, the competition was tough and the PTEF Board faced the difficult tasks of selecting the best of the best."

The winners are:

  • Dolores Miller, Bower Hill, special education, will receive an iPad for her Autistic Support Classroom to assist students with significant communication and language delays.
  • Maria Piatt, Bower Hill, kindergarten teacher, will receive classroom aids to assist in teaching effective listening skills.  This would address not only phonemic and phonetic skills, but would explicitly teach self-regulation and listening skills.
  • Nancy Hobbs and Kristen Sacco, Bower Hill third grade teacher, will receive there iPads to enhance the PIE reading program and students will be able to select, write, share and extend books through the technology.
  • Katherine Stouden, middle school librarian, will receive 12 NOOK eReaders and book selections to support the curriculum at PTMS and its reading counts initiative.
  • Denise Hitchens, high school English teacher, will receive 15 Samsung Chromebooks to facilitate a blended classroom environment with the necessary tools for classroom collaboration, online exploration and to integrate elements of a "flipped" classroom.
  • Lindsey Myers and Beth Wilmus, high school librarian and world language teachers respectively, will receive five iPads to help Spanish IV students research and create fairy tales to increase fluency and their knowledge of the Spanish culture. The tales will also be shared with elementary students to promote language learning and multicultural education.

In the past 18 months, the PTEF has provided more than $16,500 in funds to support education at all levels in Peters Township.
