Education Foundation Provides Grants to Peters Township Teachers

Three district teachers were awarded nearly $7,000 to support classroom projects, including the use of iPads.

Three  teachers have been awarded Granting Educators Opportunities (GEO) grants from the Peters Township Education Foundation (PTEF).

In total, the foundation awarded nearly $7,000 in grant funds to support classroom projects at , and .

High school librarian Lindsey Myers was awarded a grant for her global literature project that will use iPads and related applications to connect students in Peters Township with a classroom abroad as they commonly read the novel "Siddhartha." Through the iPad, the students will be able to facilitate small group discussions across the continents.

Middle school language arts teacher Nicole Mitchell was awarded the grant to purchase iPads and Kindles to help create a classic literature revival within the eighth-grade students. Earlier this year, Mitchell received the ING Unsung Heroes grant that will also fund part of the equipment for the classroom.

In her second-grade classroom at PV, Kelly Zajicek will incorporate technology to reinforce and improve basic skills. While the students will see time on the iPad as a chance to play, they will be reinforcing curriculum concepts including reading fluency, spelling and basic math skills.

In their applications, the teachers all commonly addressed the utilization of the new technology as not only educational tools but as ways to positively engage the students in the learning process.

"It's incredibly gratifying as the president of the foundation—and as a teacher in the district—to be able to ensure that forward thinking ideas are both appreciated and rewarded,” PTEF president Matthew Cheran said in a statement. “The foundation looks forward to continued support from staff and the community in order to make these grants possible."

This is the first year for the GEO grants within Peters Township schools.
