Understanding AFib and Knowing Your Treatment Options

Robert J. Moraca, MD, specializing in thoracic and cardiac surgery and William A. Belden, MD, specializing in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, will offer a free program on understanding atrial fibrillation (afib) and knowing your treatment option at the Outpatient Care Center in Peters Township.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of irregular heartbeat — yet not all types of afib are easily diagnosed. Without proper treatment, afib increases your risk of stroke five-fold, has a central role in the development of congestive heart failure and may significantly impair quality of life. More than 2 million Americans are currently living with atrial fibrillation, with more than 350,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Until now, there has been no simple, effective treatment to correct the underlying cause of afib.

The atrial fibrillation specialists at WPAHS have several treatment options to control or cure afib, including advanced medical therapy, catheter ablation and minimally invasive MAZE procedures all of which can restore normal heart function and help patients with a fib to maintain a healthy, active life.
