Flipping Good Turnout at Peters Cheerleading Fundraiser

Community members packed in to benefit the Peters Township High School cheerleading squad for its third annual pancake breakfast Saturday.

What does it take to get a mountain of pancakes around here?

Six dollars and a trip to O’Brien Hall at , where cheerleaders held an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The event also included a 50-50 raffle and a Chinese auction featuring gift baskets donated by Peters families and local businesses, as well as contests where contestants flipped, tossed, decorated and ate their way to victory.

After expenses, the breakfast pulled in roughly $7,800, which is nearly $2,000 more than last year, according to cheerleading head coach Chelsea Stockhausen. The funds will help offset expenses such as trips, uniforms, training camps and coaches' salaries.

When Patch dropped in at 10 a.m., the line was backed up to the door, as attendees waited for tables to become available. Cheerleaders ferried plates of pancakes through the crowded room, and volunteers manned the griddles.

“This year, I feel like there’s way more than last year,” Stockhausen said, gazing around the packed hall.

At around 10:30 a.m., volunteers selling tickets at the door took a breather after the first lull of the morning. Moments later, a decorating contest between school coaches began.

A crowd of youth cheerleaders swarmed around boys soccer Coach Joe Jelinski, who used a plastic knife to carve a Christmas tree out of a pancake. The girls helped ornament the tree with icing and marshmallows—and when they voted on the best design, Jelinski won out.

“My creative juices were definitely helped by the girls,” Jelinksi said with a laugh. “They pushed me in the right path to discover my inner Michelangelo.”

But at least one artist denounced Jelinski’s victory as a result of collusion.

“I got robbed!” Stockhausen cried.
