A former baseball standout is sliding into home as he slides into a chance at the pros.
The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Jimmy Rider, a second baseman-shortstop, in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday. Rider graduated from Peters in 2008.
The Post-Gazette reports that after WPIAL play in high school, Rider helped Kent State become the first Mid-American Conference team to make the NCAA Super Regionals. Earlier this season he became the all-time hits leader in the MAC and he has 346 hits heading into the Super Regionals.
