McMurray Elementary Holds an Important Skype Date with Green Bay-area Elementary

With video conferencing technology, purchased by the district, two elementary classrooms talk Super Bowl via video chat.

Sixth-grade students at McMurray Elementary in Ms. Sue Kochin and Ms. Heather Lasser's classrooms met for a conference Thursday. Not just any conference -- a special video meeting with a Green Bay-area elementary school.

The video chat featured poems, cheers, songs and one hefty challenge post-Super Bowl. Students showed pride for their hometown team in many forms. The Green Bay-area elementary commenced the chat with the top 10 reasons why the Packers will win the Super Bowl. McMurray Elementary students rebutted with self-written poems and a rap, favoring the black and gold.

Soon after the prideful cheers of "Go Pack Go!" and "Here We Go!" a challenge was discussed. Kochin challenged the Green Bay-area classroom.

"If, well when, the Steelers win, we're going to send you a Terrible Towel and we must see you holding it and hanging it in your classroom," she said.

The opposing elementary proposed a return challenge. They will send McMurray Elementary students an official cheesehead, which the students must wear.

The classrooms plan to meet again via video chat post-Super Bowl.

"We've done this before with Nasa, museums and even between [district] buildings," said Shelly Belcher, district communications coordinator. "The software is really nice."

Purchased by the district's technology department, the video conferencing allows the staff to bring different programs to students, according to Belcher. Skype was used to walk students through a library tour, as well.

The teachers agreed to reconvene Tuesday afternoon. The Green Bay-area classroom is preparing to win; if so, they will have Monday off from school.

Kochin had the original idea to Skype between classrooms; she simply searched online for a school in Green Bay. According to Kochin, she found their "Shelly-person" and set it up.

She plans to be with family for gameday, with her daughter and new granddaughter. A big turkey dinner is in the works, among other favorite Super Bowl foods.

Below is the rap written by two of Kochin's students, Leah Kolesar and Erin Faber:

Mike Tomlin tells them what to do,

Here comes Pouncey with one shoe.

Polamalu has wild hair,

Harrison don't play to get fair.

Hood and Woodley got a sack,

So here comes the quarterback.

Heath Miller is such a killer,

Mendenhall with the football,

William Gay really likes to play.

The double, double Us, Ward and Wallace,

were looking in the stands and they really saw us!

My Terrible Towel flying in the air,

indicates that I really care.

Young or old, we wear black and gold,

and we cel-e-brate the Super Bowl.

Word.
