Safety Drill Planned at Pleasant Valley

The drill is planned for Monday.

As Peters Township School District continues its safety preparedness efforts, Pleasant Valley Elementary School will be conducting an emergency lockdown drill on Monday.

This drill will take place at approximately 2 p.m. Just as the district conducts monthly fire drills and annual severe weather drills, this lockdown drill is done bi-annually to ensure the school practices and reflects upon each experience.

"Reflection is our way of ensuring we are prepared if the need for a lockdown should ever arise," a district spokeswoman said.

A school lockdown may be initiated when school officials believe that there is a credible threat to student and staff safety. Lockdowns are classically used to
protect students from intruders, bomb threats, and other forms of violence, but
they can also be used when police are engaged in an operation nearby or when a national disaster has been declared. The goal of a school lockdown is to keep students and staff safe, and while it may be frightening or disruptive, it is important to comply with the lockdown for safety reasons.

Throughout this drill, we will be following school district protocol regarding teacher and administrative communication. Our teachers and staff will be discussing this drill with their students to ensure they are prepared and know what to do when this exercise is announced. While this is a proactive part of our safety preparations, please note that in the case of a true emergency parents would be notified of the situation via the District's Emergency Parent Notification System.
