Seven Students Move to State Science Competition in May

Middle school student scientists head to the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science at Pennsylvania State University.

Seven Peters Township Middle School students earned first place awards and the opportunity to move on to the state Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition in May at Penn State.

The team comprised of Varun Sharma (grade 7), Haley Hamschin (grade 7), Raashmi Krishnasamy (grade 8), Sebastian Hymson (grade 8), Lily Fornot (grade 7), Charlie Meyers (grade 7) and Maria Oldenberg (grade 8) competed at the end of February in a regional competition at California University of Pennsylvania.

The student scientists prepared for the events by using the scientific method to select a project, research it, develop a hypothesis and lastly, come up with an experiment that will allow them to collect data to prove or disprove the hypothesis, according to a news release. Both a written and an oral report on the project were presented.
