Students Celebrate Pittsburgh Day

Polka, pierogies and more!

Friday, February 1 was Pittsburgh Day at Bower Hill Elementary. Third graders at Bower Hill Elementary marked the end of their social studies unit entitled “Pittsburgh: From Frontier to Urban Community” by celebrating Pittsburgh Day on Feb. 1.

The students celebrated the city of Pittsburgh and its rich culture and history. They rotated through stations where they created their own Pittsburgh paintings in the style of Andy Warhol, learned to polka and made their own pierogies.

As a special end to the day, the students took part in an official tailgate party that featured a special guest this year. Mr. Joe Grkman, grandfather to a third grader at the school, volunteered to come and play the accordion as the students showed off their polka skills. They also had a chance to taste the pierogies they made earlier in the day.
