Businessman Spearheads Effort for Outdoor Screen During Pirates Playoffs Run

Where would you like to watch the Bucs if you can't get tickets into PNC Park?

By Richard Cook

Taking a page from the Pittsburgh Penguins' playoffs playbook, Pittsburgh-area financial specialist David E. Martin thinks that a giant outdoor screen should be set up to allow fans without PNC Park tickets to watch Pirates baseball—should they make the playoffs.

"Why not?" Martin asks. "Can you imagine the excitement of such a venue? The Pirates have made summer fun again in Pittsburgh, and let's face it: There are way more fans than available seats at PNC Park."

Martin has approached several organizations, including the Pirates, the Steelers, the H.J. Heinz Company and others about setting up an outdoor venue for the playoffs.

He's even started a Facebook page so that fans can add their suggested venues

Martin said that there are plenty of viable options, including Heinz FieldPoint State Park, the Roberto Clemente Bridge (which closes for Pirates home games) and outside of CONSOL Energy Center, just to name a few.

"We need to get the planning for this done now," Martin says. "It may be for just one wild card game, or hopefully, right through the World Series. It worked well for the Penguins. Why not the Pirates?"
