Peters Keeps it Close, but Chartiers Claims Win

Chartiers Valley Patch writer, Daniel Miller, reports for Peters Patch.

It wasn’t pretty, but the Colts were able to overcome sloppy play to defeat visiting Section 4-AAAA rival Peters Township last night at Chartiers Valley’s second annual “Pink out” for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

And while Coach Tim McConnell is pleased with the 64-56 victory, he wasn’t particularly happy with the fact that the Colts continue to make the same mistakes.

The first quarter was evenly matched with a score of 19-19, according to Peters athletic department intern, Jeanna Kamphaus.

“I thought we stunk tonight,” he said. “We missed easy shots. We didn’t make good decisions. We turned the ball over. I don’t really think the effort was there. It just wasn’t Chartiers Valley basketball.”

The one bright spot for the Colts however, was that they forced 26 turnovers. It was the first time  that Chartiers Valley (13-4, 7-3) was able to cause more than 20 turnovers.

“That’s why we won,” McConnell said. “We didn’t play particularly good defense tonight. So that isn’t encouraging.”

McConnell’s main gripe came from the fact that the Colts held a 15-point lead midway through the third quarter, yet could not shut the door on the Indians. In fact, Peters Township cut the Chartiers Valley lead to eight when Dakota Norton hit a 3-pointer with 2:37 left in the third. Norton finished with a game-high 20 points.

Norton was the top scorer for Peters with 18 points, and Gabe Pritz racked in close behind with 15 points, according to Kamphaus.

Peters Township varsity boys basketball plays next against Moon at home Saturday, Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. Note: This game is rescheduled from a prior date and time.
