What was once an old farm field into a place where children and adults of all abilities will be able to enjoy the game of baseball.
Players, volunteers, families and community leaders gathered at the brand new Pirates Charities Miracle League Field of the South Hills Saturday, located next to the , to celebrate.
"This is just so cool," said Sean Casey, former MLB all-star and Upper St. Clair resident. "I'm grateful to see all of these great big hearts here."
Sean Casey and his wife, Mandi, to raise $1 million to build a Miracle League Field in Upper St. Clair. Their vision won over the hearts and businesses in Upper St. Clair and the surrounding area.
Because of the Casey's hard work and the community's support, there is now a custom-designed, rubberized field that allows kids and adults with special needs to have their own baseball league.
"This is a great testament of greater Pittsburgh and Upper St. Clair. It shows what can happen when a community comes together," said Bob Nutting, chairman of the board and principal owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. "It's not about the sponsors, or the money raised, it's about the experience these kids are going to have."
"Every child out here today is a miracle from God," said Stephanie Davis, program director of the Miracle League, bringing tears to many parents' eyes. "I would like to thank your community."
Pittsburgh Pirates Joel Hanrahan and Jason Grilli, and Chicago Cub Ryan Dempster were on-hand to support the opening of the field after a late game Friday and another game scheduled for Saturday night.
The ceremony was emceed by Pittsburgh Pirates announcer Greg Brown.
In addition to the field, the complex features wheelchair-accessible dugouts and restrooms. There are plans to build a specially-designed playground behind the outfield for the entire community to enjoy in the near future.
The Miracle League Field in Upper St. Clair is the second in Pittsburgh. The first is located in . Two additional Miracle League fields are under construction nearby—in Murrysville and Wheeling, WV.
