Christmas Card Delivers Hope

A South Fayette third-grader designed a Christmas card that will be used by Edgar Snyder's law firm.

Emily Washburn wanted to make a difference when she designed a Christmas card that won a contest organized by Edgar Snyder & Associates.

The South Fayette Elementary School third-grader submitted her Christmas card that had a rainbow of different colored ribbons with one wish for the holidays: To cure all cancer.

It was one of four winning designs selected by the Pittsburgh-based law firm that will be featured on their annual holiday cards. Emily was proud of her card’s message, especially after her school had just spent October raising awareness for breast cancer.

“I think I put in a lot of effort because I had to draw the Christmas tree and the angels and the ribbons,” the 8-year-old said.

Emily’s mother, Leslie Childers, said she found out right away that her daughter had won the contest.

“As soon as she got off the bus she started hollering and ran down the road yelling ‘Mooooom! I won! I won!’ She was very excited,” Childers said.

Nearly 1,300 children from across the region submitted their Christmas cards to the law firm. A committee reviewed all of the cards and chose Emily’s card because of the beautiful colors that also had a serious message.

“We were very impressed with Emily’s mature, cure for cancer theme for her holiday card,” said Lisa Rosen, who is a law frim spokeswoman. “Her understanding and creativity using different colored ribbons to represent different cancers was very sophisticated for an 8–year-old.”

Allie Pultorak, 10, Wexford was the grand prize winner and will receive a $250 Target gift card and a $1,000 donation from Edgar Snyder to her Marshall Elementary School. Emily, and two others, Isabella Carde, 9, Wyland Elementary School in Allison Park, and Karleigh Risha, 10, Menallen Elementary School in Uniontown, received a $100 gift card to Target and will have their designs featured on the law firm’s holiday card.
