Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society where communities come together to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

The fundraiser encourages cancer survivors, patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, churches and community volunteers to participate to raise money for research. Teams of people from area companies, clubs, neighborhoods and families raise funds prior to the event and then take turns walking the track in relays.

“Relay For Life reminds us that progress has been made in the fight against cancer and that everyone who participates is making a difference,” the American Cancer Society said in a press release.

There will also be a special luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. on the first day of the fundraiser. The luminaria is designed to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have died from their illness.

Luminaria may be purchased with a donation from the heart at the stadium from 1-7 p.m. at the luminaria tent before the ceremony.

New this year are pinwheels, which can hold up to six names honoring or remembering someone affected by cancer. The pinwheels are available for a $20 donation, also at the luminaria tent and will be displayed on the fence surrounding the track.

For more information about the pinwheels or luminaria, contact Rita Reo at 724-263-9329.

Family style games, live musical entertainment from local musicians and vocalists will be featured, and concessions will be available. The public is welcome to all events. Admission is free.
