Viewfinder – Pet Search Hosts Yard Sale and Treasure Hunt

Pet Search, a local animal rescue group, hosts a Yard Sale and Treasure Hunt June 10 and 11 at 915 Jessop Place in Washington, PA.

Books, records, televisions and all sorts of knick knacks are on sale at the annual Yard Sale and Treasure Hunt in Washington, PA.

Pet Search volunteers were out on the lawn hocking their goods for a worthy cause. All the proceeds go right back the all volunteer nonprofit animal rescue and placement service.

Pet Search dedicates itself to the rescue, care and placement of homeless or unwanted animals in southwestern Pennsylvania. Founded by animal lovers, Sherry Knight and her husband, in 1987 as People for Animal Welfare, the group was rechristened Pet Search in 1996.

Mary Ellen Meola, the organization’s president, said, “We are an all volunteer organization. We provide foster homes to dogs, cats and other animals. We don’t euthanize any of our animals. We do have them spayed and neutered before placing them in a permanent home.”

Meola went on to explain that a foster home is a family environment and not a kennel. Pet Search is a compassionate organization hoping to make a difference in the treatment of unwanted or homeless pets.

Meola added, “Currently we have 200 animals in foster care waiting to be placed with loving, adoptive homes.”

Kathy Dzikowski, the organization’s treasurer, reported that she is presently fostering 30 animals in her home.

From 1987 to 1996, the group placed or helped place over 3,000 homeless and unwanted dogs and cats, puppies and kittens, as well as birds, rabbits, pigmy goats, potbelly pigs, reptiles, and ferrets.

Pet Search offers several services. The organization offers humane education courses, educating the public, especially children, in the care and welfare of animals to prevent mistreatment. They have a pet therapy program, where they take pets to area nursing homes to bring enjoyment to the residents. They hold several Adopt-A-Thon’s throughout the year at PetsMart and PETCO, and they have a Rabies Plus Clinic.

In October, Pet Search will come to Peterswood Park with their Rabies Plus Clinic, offering $5 rabies shots as well as other vaccines (available at an additional charge).

The Yard Sale and Treasure Hunt is one of the group's largest fundraisers. Go on the hunt today. You never know what you might find.
