Charles C. McEwen Sr., 72, of McMurray died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 in St. Clair Hospital. He was born Aug. 18, 1940 in Louisville, KY, the son of the late Edward L. and Elsie Kent McEwen. Mr. McEwen was Lutheran. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during Vietnam as a meteorologist. He was a member of the Canonsburg Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed shooting, fishing, woodworking, baking and spending time with family. Mr. McEwen was a salesman for Conoco Oil. He was well-known for storytelling and always telling a great joke. Only July16, 1960 in New Jersey, he married Gail Felgentreu, who survives. Joann Patricia Refosco Lavorgna, 75, of McMurray, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 in the Donnell House, Washington. She was born Oct. 14, 1936 in Hendersonville, a daughter of Joseph and Anna Stankus Refosco. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a clerk for CoGo’s and was a homemaker. Her husband, William Anthony Lavorgna died April 8, 2012. Surviving are two sons, Kevin Lavorgna (Renee) of McMurray and Keith Lavorgna of Canonsburg, three daughters, Karen Cargo (Mark) of Charlotte, N.C., Krista (Mike) Johnson of Peters Township, and Keri Lavorgna of Greensboro, N.C. H. Kenneth Giles Jr. of McMurray, 84, died Monday after a short illness. A native of Philadelphia, he attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1950. He then served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. At the conclusion of his tour of duty, he joined Bell of Pennsylvania, now Verizon, where he held various management positions, moving to western Pennsylvania in 1960. After 35 years with the company, he retired in 1988. He joined Shiloh Industrial Contractors, Inc. of Lawrence, PA, that same year, where he served as controller for eight years. Peters Township's W.R. “Bill” Bothe died peacefully at the age of 81 last Friday. Bothe was the beloved husband of 60 years to Sally (Schafer) Bothe. He was born on March 18, 1931, son of the late Wilbert and Isabel Bothe. A graduate of Steubenville High School, he attended Miami University (Ohio) before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. After military service, he began his career in the steel and metals industry. Peters Township's Joseph Astorino died peacefully at the age of 101 on Wednesday. Known as "the family gem" of McMurray, he was the beloved husband of 75 years to the late Jennie Gaudio Astorino. Born on Feb. 27, 1911, in Cosenza, Italy, Astorino came to the U.S. at 14 to work at Vimco Macaroni Company in Carnegie. He and his family were one of the last families to live on Route 19. In fact, he was very proud to have been the owner of a farm, which was located where Sharp Edge Brasserie is now.
