Nearly 150 people took part this year.

The Peters Township Chamber of Commerce held their 4th Annual Chamber Chase 5K Run/Walk on Saturday at Arrowhead Trail. Nearly 150 runners and walkers braved the crisp, clear morning to support the chamber’s scholarship and community funds.   Race director Anna Pikelis was extremely pleased with the turnout.  “I would especially like to thank our sponsors and volunteers. Peters Library Resumes Walking Program

It's that time of year! Take a hike with library patrons while listening to a new book or a favorite author.

A study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that although more Americans are walking, they are not exercising enough to reap the health benefits. At least 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise, like brisk walking, helps prevent heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, depression and some forms of cancer, according to a recent release from Peters Township Public Library. To help patrons in their efforts to exercise daily, the library is resuming its popular “Listen While You Walk” program beginning Thursday, Sept. 6 at 9:15 a.m. The program, beginning its second year, offers walkers another way to exercise while listening to a new book or favorite author. Staff and volunteers will introduce attendees to a …

Candlelit Montour Trail Draws Peters Township Supporters

The annual Twilight Trail Walk, welcoming patrons and pups, started nine years ago. Since then, it's grown significantly.

In its 9th year, the Twilight Trail Walk attracted Peters Township residents in droves to participate in a chief effort to maintain the staple passageway.   For a $7 donation, night walkers—including dogs—trekked from Farmhouse Coffee to St. Petersburg Center (or vice versa) along the Montour Trail, which was lit beautifully with luminarias. Parents and children received a glow stick/necklace, a raffle ticket, a drink and Eat’n Park cookie ticket, and dog treats were provided for the pups. Other items, such as Blinkies, popcorn and SnoCones were for sale—Peters students Morgan Everson and Korie Roberts served up the icy treats. Last year, more than 500 people attended the annual event. “We’re hopeful for that number again,” said Mark …

On Friday, July 27, walkers, Peters Township residents and Friends of the Montour Trail will convene for an annual benefit dear to trail lovers near and far.  From 8:30-10:30 p.m., participants can walk along the luminaria-lit Arrowhead Trail (the Peters portion) for $7. Walkers will also receive a glow necklace and an entry into a raffle for great prizes from McMurray businesses.  This year, there are two starting locations planned: Farmhouse Coffee/My Big Fat Greek Gyro and St. Petersburg Center on Valley Brook Road. The Friends of the Montour Trail organization encourages attendees to bring a chair and stay for refreshments and music following the walk.  Registration will take place that night only. Bebout Trail Bridge to Close Oct. 24

Demolition will cause road closures for three weeks.

The trail overpass at Bebout and Valley Brook roads in Peters will begin demolition Monday, Oct. 24, causing road closures for three weeks, according to township Manager Michael Silvestri. There may be some geotechnical exploration on the trail to do next week, he said. Until early November, Silvestri is urging residents to follow posted signs and detours—Justabout Road to Thomas Road. Montour Trail Council volunteers will also be marking the detour at nearly every turn with directional arrows for trail users’ convenience, its newsletter states. "But for those of you with smart phones, simply scan the QR code on this page." The council has placed directional signs through the Colony Manor and Briarcliff plans to Peterswood Park for …

Peters Library Launches 'Listen While You Walk'

Walk the Arrowhead Trail while listening to your favorite "Playaway" audiobook.

Find yourself humming the tune of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' "Whistle While You Work"? The library's new program will allow you to do just that—work off calories, and well, the whistling is up to you.  Warning: The autumnal scenery just might make you whistle. Peters Township Public Library launched “Listen While You Walk” this week. Starting on Sept. 8, community members can join library staff, volunteers and neighbors for a 30-minute walk on the Arrowhead Trail. The program offers the opportunity to combine physical exercise while listening to a favorite book or author. The library will offer a selection of “Playaways,” all-in-one audiobooks, for participants to choose from for their walk. “(The library is) offering this fall …

Surely, this is some kind of joke, isn't it? People have had electronic mobile devices for a long time, devices that download podcasts, and other listening materials for a long time. There aren't enough hours in the day to listen to podcasts, and other similar audio books, lectures, and other teaching that I would like to inhale. Itunes offers a huge selection of materials, and many people have …   more ›

Luminaria-Lit Montour Trail Attracts Night Walkers for a Shaping Cause

Walkers united Friday for the Twilight Trail Walk, an effort to benefit the maintenance and expansion of the trail in Peters.

Karen Robbins, her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and other Friends of The Montour Trail in Peters Township greeted hikers and their pets as they arrived at the St. Petersburg Center trail entrance. Down the road, at the Farmhouse Coffee/Big Fat Greek Gyro check-in location, Sandy Bosick, Jamie Headley and Chris Nagoda handed out glow sticks and raffle tickets. For a $5 donation, hikers walked along the path lit with luminaries, votive candles inside recycled two-liter beverage bottles. The donation came with the glow stick, raffle ticket, a drink and a cookie ticket (children under five were free). Registration started just before 8 p.m. at the St. Petersburg location. DJ Bryan Lee of BML Entertainment spun a selection of adult …
