Two upcoming fundraisers are planned.
An effort is under way to save Canonsburg Lake in North Strabane and Peters townships. Because of sedimentation, the original 76-acre lake has been reduced to about 63 acres, and the maximum depth has been reduced from more than 42 feet to less than 12 feet, according to The Almanac. Debra Valentino, a volunteer spearheading the effort, told the newspaper that a 2008 study found that there would be no deep water in the lake in 10 years and no lake at all in 25 years. Two fundraisers are coming up to celebrate Canonsburg Lake's 70th anniversary. The first will be from 7 to 9 p.m. April 29 at the Table Lakeside and Walnut Ridge Vineyards, 200 N. Peters and North Strabane fire departments responded to the scene at Canonsburg Lake.
North Strabane fire Chief Mark Grimm said it took first responders about 25 minutes to rescue a woman and her child Tuesday afternoon after they had become stuck in Canonsburg Lake. He said the water in the back part of the lake on the North Strabane side is shallow, and that the woman's kayak "bottomed out" there. "It's really murky and muddy," Grimm said. He said two firefighters were sent in to rescue the pair, using a kayak to pull the woman's safely to shore. The names of the woman and her school-aged child were not immediately available Tuesday afternoon, but Grimm said neither were injured. Coroner Tim Warco said Joseph Schneider died as a result of drowning and ruled his death an accident.
The Washington County Coroner on Wednesday said Joseph Schneider, the 21-year-old Houston man whose body was found in Canonsburg Lake on March 24, died as a result of drowning and ruled his death an accident. The Houston man went missing March 23 after a party with friends at the house next door to Table Brick Oven & Bar. He and three friends jumped into Canonsburg Lake and attempted to swim across. His body was found 20-30 yards offshore, Peters police Capt. Michael Yanchak told Patch. East Bethlehem Township Scuba Rescue, as well as the Scottdale VFD Dive Team, assisted in the overnight search—Peters and North Strabane police responded to the scene. Joseph Paul "Joey" Schneider, 21, of Houston, died tragically Saturday, March 24, 2012. He was the dear son of Jeffry Paul and Susan Ann (Brannon) Schneider; brother of Heather (Dave) Ciabattoni and Lisa Frank; grandson of the late Edward and JoAnne Brannon and Mary Jane (the late Joseph) Schneider; and uncle of Kaliegh, Madison and Dominic. Joey was a 2009 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School and was currently a student at Waynesburg University, majoring in business management. Friends will be welcome from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at William Slater II Funeral Service, 1650 Greentree Rd. in Scott Township. About 100 people turned out to a vigil held at Canonsburg Lake Monday night to honor the life of Joseph Schneider.
A man who drowned in Canonsburg Lake this past weekend was memorialized Monday night there—where about 100 friends gathered to honor his life. “Monday night, loved ones released balloons and lit candles in memory of the Waynesburg University student,” KDKA TV reported on its website. Joseph Schneider had been attempting to swim across the lake with friends Friday night when he went missing. Search crews began a rescue effort that night, which turned tragic when the Houston man’s body was discovered by divers in the lake around noon the next day. The cause and manner of his death is pending an autopsy, Washington County Coroner Tim Warco has said.
